Definition

What is ChatGPT visibility?

How often and how high ChatGPT names your brand, and which pages it links. On Rendix's scans, three things set ChatGPT apart:

The first brand changes

Ask ChatGPT the same question again and the brand it names first can change.

40.7 % of the times ChatGPT answered a question again, a different brand came first. It changed least of the four engines.

2,768 pairs of consecutive scans of 36 questions, Aug 10 to Oct 7, 2026. First brand = the first one the answer names; answers naming Rendix left out.

It cites a few pages and swaps them

ChatGPT gives about eight links an answer, and most are gone the next time.

22.3 % of the pages ChatGPT cited were cited again on the next run of the same question, the lowest of the four engines.

2,067 pairs of consecutive answers, Aug 26 to Oct 7, 2026; Gemini counted by domain, as it gives no page URLs. Median links per answer: ChatGPT 8, Perplexity 9, Gemini 9, AI Overviews 7.

Its searches name brands

When ChatGPT shows the web searches behind an answer, they often already name the tools.

54.2 % of the searches ChatGPT showed named a brand of the category; Perplexity 4.4 %, Gemini 1.9 %.

168 searches ChatGPT showed in 61 of 748 answers, mostly in August 2026; Perplexity 573, Gemini 1,616. AI Overviews shows none.

Method

How does Rendix track ChatGPT?

The chat a buyer uses, on a fixed schedule, every answer kept with its links and read the same way each time.

  1. Ask in the chat, with web search on

Each question goes to the ChatGPT chat a buyer uses, with web search on, through Bright Data. Not through the API.

  2. Three times a week

Every tracked question runs on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and on paid plans any question can be re-run live, 30 times a month.

  3. Keep the whole answer and its links

The full answer is stored with every link it gives: the source chips and the links inside the text, about eight per answer.

  4. Read who is named, in order

Brands are matched by name, domain and known aliases, and a brand's place is the order in which the answer first names it.

  5. Score the place

First place earns 10 points, tenth earns 1, a mention without a place 1, no mention 0. The score is the points as a share of the maximum, over every question and run.

  6. Say what ChatGPT does not show

ChatGPT rarely shows its searches (61 of 748 answers), and since Oct 7, 2026 the pages it read come back empty. Rendix marks both as not available, never as zero.

Why does my own ChatGPT check look different?

Because one answer is one sample. Ask again and ChatGPT may name other brands, in another order, and link other pages.

Across Rendix's scans the first brand changed in 40.7 % of ChatGPT's repeat answers, and only 22.3 % of the pages it cited came back the next time. Your own check is one more sample, with your wording on your day. Rendix asks the same wording on a fixed schedule, so the runs compare with each other.

Questions about ChatGPT visibility

Need more help? team@rendix.io

A tool that asks ChatGPT your buyers' questions on a schedule and records whether your brand is named, in which place, and which pages it cites.

The point is the trend, since one answer is one sample. Rendix asks in the ChatGPT chat with web search on, three times a week.

Asked on Oct 9, 2026, ChatGPT itself named Otterly.AI, Peec AI, Profound and Scrunch AI, in that order.

Ask again and the order may change: across Rendix's scans the first brand changed in 40.7 % of ChatGPT's repeat answers. Rendix asks in the chat with web search on and publishes how it counts on its AI visibility page.

The same idea as a rank tracker for Google, applied to ChatGPT's answers: your brand's place in the answer instead of a position in the results.

ChatGPT has no results page, so the place is the order in which the answer names brands. Rendix scores first place at 10 points and tenth at 1, so the score moves with the place.

Ask ChatGPT your buyers' questions on a schedule and record every answer; one manual check is one sample.

Rendix picks the buyer questions in your category, asks ChatGPT with web search on three times a week, and shows who is named, in which place, and which pages are cited.

No. Answers come from the ChatGPT chat with web search on, so they match what a buyer sees.

ChatGPT search reads the web through OpenAI's own crawler, OAI-SearchBot, and in one study 87 % of its citations matched Bing's top results. A site that blocks OAI-SearchBot does not appear in ChatGPT search.

From the web searches it runs for the question: the higher a page ranks there, the more often it is cited.

In 16,851 queries, 88.6 % fanned out into exactly two searches, and the first result was cited 58 % of the time against 14 % for the tenth.
