Definition

What is Google AI Overviews visibility?

How often the overview at the top of Google names your brand, in which place, and which pages it cites. On Rendix's scans, three things set AI Overviews apart:

It shows up almost every time

For the questions Rendix tracks, Google put an overview above the results in nearly every run.

94.1 % of 768 runs had an AI Overview; every question asked more than once got one in most of its runs.

36 questions, Aug 10 to Oct 7, 2026. The 2 questions that never got an overview were asked once each. A full bar is 12 questions.

It cites forums and videos

AI Overviews link to Reddit threads, YouTube videos and similar pages far more often than the other engines.

16.7 % of AI Overviews' citations went to Reddit, YouTube, LinkedIn, Quora, Medium or Hacker News; Perplexity 0.6 %, ChatGPT 0.1 %.

4,457 AI Overviews citations, Aug 26 to Oct 7, 2026, sorted by the site in the address. Gemini returns domains only and is left out. A full bar is 20 %.

Its first brand moves most

Ask Google again and the overview often opens with another brand.

53.6 % of AI Overviews' repeat answers named a different brand first, the most of the four engines.

2,768 pairs of consecutive scans of 36 questions, Aug 10 to Oct 7, 2026. First brand = the first one the answer names; answers naming Rendix left out.

Method

How does Rendix track Google AI Overviews?

Google's results page on a fixed schedule, every overview kept in full with its pages, and a run without an overview kept out of the score.

  1. Read Google's results page

Each question is searched on Google in your brand's market, the United States unless you set another, through DataForSEO, which returns the AI Overview expanded in full with the pages it cites.

  2. Three times a week

Every tracked question runs on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and on paid plans any question can be re-run live, 30 times a month.

  3. Ask again when the overview is cut short

Google sometimes returns an overview only part-way rendered. A capture shorter than 1,200 characters is requested once more and the longer one is kept.

  4. No overview is not a zero

A run where Google showed no overview is marked as no answer and left out of every score and denominator, so a missing overview never counts against you.

  5. Read who is named and score the place

Brands are matched by name, domain and known aliases in the order the overview first names them. First place earns 10 points, tenth 1, a mention without a place 1, no mention 0.

Ranking helps less than it used to: in January 2026 only 37.9 % of AI Overview citations came from Google's top 10 for the query, and 31 % from beyond the top 100. In the overview above, 13 of the 16 pages cited were other sites' lists or comparisons of tools. On this question the overview named Ahrefs first in all 5 runs, while the pages it cited changed.

Questions about Google AI Overviews

Need more help? team@rendix.io

A tool that searches Google for your buyers' questions on a schedule and records whether the AI Overview names your brand, in which place, and which pages it cites.

One overview is one sample, so the trend is the point. Rendix reads the overview three times a week and keeps every run.

Search your buyers' questions on Google on a schedule and keep every overview, with the brands it names in order and the pages it cites.

Rendix picks the buyer questions in your category, reads the overview for each three times a week, and shows it next to ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini on the same question.

Be indexed and eligible for a snippet in Google Search: Google says AI Overviews have no other requirements and need no special markup.

Google calls optimizing for its generative AI features "still SEO". Eligible is not shown, though. In the overview above, 13 of the 16 pages cited were other sites' lists or comparisons of tools, and none was the site of a brand it named.

Not by itself. In January 2026 only 37.9 % of AI Overview citations came from Google's top 10 for the query, and 31 % from beyond the top 100.

Google says AI Overviews may also run related searches of their own, a technique it calls query fan-out, to fetch more results.

Then there is nothing to be named in, and Rendix leaves that run out of every score instead of counting it as a zero.

In Rendix's own category Google showed an overview in 94.1 % of 768 runs, and a missing one rarely meant the question never gets one: every question asked more than once had an overview in most of its runs.

Partly. Search Console's Generative AI performance report shows impressions of your pages in AI Overviews and AI Mode, by page, country, date and device.

It lists no queries, so it tells you which pages appear and not for which questions. Rendix starts from the questions and shows who the overview names for each.

Source: Search Console Help

Through DataForSEO's Google results API, which returns the AI Overview expanded in full with its sources.

Rendix asks in your brand's market, retries an overview that came back cut short, and stores the full text with every cited page.
