Definition

What is AI visibility?

It is counted per answer, across engines and over time, because no single answer is the whole picture. Three things it is often confused with:

Not your Google ranking

AI answers cite different pages than Google ranks.

8 % of the pages ChatGPT cited also ranked in Google's top 10 for the same prompt.

Across 15,000 long-tail prompts. Even Google's own AI Overviews took only 37.9 % of their citations from the top 10, in January 2026.

Not LLM observability

Tools like Langfuse and Helicone monitor your own AI app. AI visibility is about AI answers naming your brand.

18 of 26 Gemini answers to "best AI visibility tools for startups" listed LLM observability tools anyway.

In 14 of those runs Gemini itself searched for "AI observability tools for startups". ChatGPT, Perplexity and AI Overviews never mixed the two up.

Not one check

Ask again and the list changes.

47.9 % of the time, the brand AI named first changed from one scan to the next.

Method

How is AI visibility measured?

Every tool counts AI visibility its own way, and few publish how. This is Rendix's formula, in full.

  1. Score each answer

First place earns 10 points, second 9, down to 1 for tenth. A brand that is named but not recommended earns 1 point. A brand that is not named earns 0.

  2. Score each question

Add the points from the 4 engines, divide by the most they could earn (40) and multiply by 100. The score runs from 0 to 100.

  3. Score the brand

Your AI visibility score is the average over the questions you track. 40 or more is good, 60 or more is excellent.

Questions about your own brand's facts, like its price, are kept out of the score: the answer names you because the question did.

Noise

How much of a score change is real?

AI answers move from run to run, so Rendix shows every score with a range. It takes the last 8 answers of each engine to each question, redraws the score 500 times from them and keeps the middle 95 %.

A move inside the range is noise. A move past it is a change. With fewer than 3 answers per engine, Rendix shows no range at all.

Questions about AI visibility

Need more help? team@rendix.io

On Rendix's 0-100 scale, 40 or more is good and 60 or more is excellent.

There is no industry standard: every tool counts visibility its own way, so the same brand can score differently in two tools. Compare your score with competitors measured the same way, on the same questions.

No. Named means the answer says your brand. Cited means it links to one of your pages as a source.

The two often come apart: in a Semrush study, 62 % of citations linked a source without naming its brand. Rendix tracks both, per engine and per question.

Visibility scores how high you are named in each answer. Rank is your place among every brand the answers name. Share of voice is your share of all brand mentions.

Rendix scores every brand with the same formula, so your visibility score and your row in the rankings are one number.

Competitors

AI answers cite different pages than Google ranks. Only 8 % of the pages ChatGPT cited for 15,000 long-tail prompts ranked in Google's top 10 for the same prompt.

The engines run their own searches behind each answer and pick from those results, so a page can rank well on Google and never reach the answer. Indexing still matters: Google AI Overviews only use pages Google has indexed.

Get your brand named where the engines look, and publish the pages that answer the questions you lose.

In a study of 75,000 brands, being named in AI answers correlated with mentions on YouTube (0.71-0.74) and across the web (0.66-0.71) far more than with domain rating (0.27-0.33). When an answer cites a comparison page, it also names that page's brand 43 % of the time, against 18 % for an informational page. Rendix turns the questions you lose into a publishing plan.

Actions

Source: Ahrefs, Dec 2025 · Semrush, Jun 2026

No study shows it does. Google says generative AI search needs no special markup and ignores AI text files.

Pages that added JSON-LD showed no major uplift in AI citations against matched pages that did not, and 97 % of the llms.txt files Ahrefs looked at got no requests at all. Both are fine to keep. Neither is a lever.
