What is Perplexity visibility?

How often and how high Perplexity names your brand, and which pages it reads and points to. On Rendix's scans, three things set Perplexity apart:

It reads many pages and points to half

Perplexity's search returns about fifteen pages, and its answer points to about seven of them.

47.0 % of the pages Perplexity's search returned were pointed to with an [n] marker in its answer: 7 of 15 per answer, median.

160 answers through Perplexity's API, Sep 28 to Oct 8, 2026. Read = every result its search returned; pointed = a result an [n] marker in the answer names.

The first brand changes

Ask Perplexity the same question again and the brand it names first often changes.

49.9 % of the times Perplexity answered a question again, a different brand came first; ChatGPT 40.7 %.

2,768 pairs of consecutive scans of 36 questions, Aug 10 to Oct 7, 2026. First brand = the first one the answer names; answers naming Rendix left out.

It searches in keywords, with the year

Before answering, Perplexity turns the question into two or three short searches.

22.5 % of the searches Perplexity ran carried a year; 0.7 % were phrased as a question.

573 Perplexity searches, a median of 3 per answer, shown in every answer since Sep 28, 2026. AI Overviews shows none.

Method

How does Rendix track Perplexity?

Perplexity's own API on a fixed schedule, every answer kept with its searches and its results, read the same way each time.

  1. Ask through Perplexity's API

Each question goes to Perplexity's own API, the sonar model with its web search tool on.

  2. Three times a week

Every tracked question runs on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and on paid plans any question can be re-run live, 30 times a month.

  3. Keep the searches and every result

The answer is stored with the searches Perplexity ran and every result its search returned, in order, next to the [n] markers that point at them.

  4. Read who is named, in order

Brands are matched by name, domain and known aliases, and a brand's place is the order in which the answer first names it.

  5. Score the place

First place earns 10 points, tenth earns 1, a mention without a place 1, no mention 0. The score is the points as a share of the maximum, over every question and run.

App or API

Should a Perplexity tracker use the app or the API?

Rendix tested both on the same 24 questions of a tracked brand. The logged-out app never named the brand; the API named it in 7 answers.

The app answers were longer, but carried fewer links: 5.8 per answer, with 10 answers carrying none, against 9.0 through the API. The API also returns the searches Perplexity ran and every result in order. So Rendix tracks Perplexity through its API, and says so.

A tool that asks Perplexity your buyers' questions on a schedule and records whether your brand is named, in which place, and which pages Perplexity uses.

One answer is one sample, so the trend is the point. Rendix asks through Perplexity's API with web search on, three times a week.

Ask Perplexity your buyers' questions on a schedule and keep every answer, with the brands it names in order.

Rendix picks the buyer questions in your category, asks them three times a week, and shows who is named, in which place, and which pages Perplexity used.

Get into the results Perplexity's own search returns, then be the page its answer points to: it pointed to 7 of the 15 pages it read.

Its searches are short keywords, often with the year. In Ahrefs' study, 28.6 % of the URLs Perplexity cited also ranked in Google's top 10 for the same prompt, the highest overlap of the assistants measured.

Yes. In Rendix's test the logged-out Perplexity app named the tracked brand in 0 of 24 answers; the API named it in 7.

The API returns the searches Perplexity ran and every result in order, and the answer's [n] markers name the results it points to.

Tools that ask Perplexity your questions on a schedule and record your brand's place in each answer.

Perplexity has no results page to rank in, so the place is the order in which the answer names brands. Rendix scores first place at 10 points and tenth at 1.

Often: the first brand changed in 49.9 % of its repeat answers in Rendix's scans.

That is more than ChatGPT (40.7 %) and less than Google AI Overviews (53.6 %). Rendix asks the same questions three times a week so a single answer is never read as the trend.
